Jewellery Designer Cheek Pinchy Makes By Hand Desireable Pieces

Artist Interview : Cheek Pinchy

Kirsten Turnbull is the creative Auckland artist behind Cheek Pinchy jewellery. A regular at plenty of the Auckland markets, her work is certainly unique and one of a kind with many of her pieces one off’s that can’t be reproduced. Her work includes brooches, earrings, necklaces, bands and art-cards. We are truly happy to have her join us for the very first Fair!

How long have you been creating jewellery? From a young age I thought that the only folk who were artistic could draw an ideal horse out of their heads. Therefore , I lived lots of my life believing I didn’t have a creative bone in my body! I’ve attempted various tiny projects over the years but never with much success. I certainly had no intention that others would see them let alone want to own any! Concepts have always bubbled about in me though and that was about 2 years back that I started the very beginnings of Cheek Pinchy. Was just the right time I think!

How did Cheek Pinchy jewellery start? It was about two years back when I was full time at home with my beautiful daughter and I wished to have a creative outlet. I had been collecting vintage fabric and bits for years and thought I would like to have a go at stitching but my skills are Terribly limited! I was finding it too frustrating and realized my enthusiasm lay with putting color and pattern together instead of with stitching. The concept to start one off collage cards using vintage images was born! Within just a few months Toggle had started selling the cards and Esther Lamb inspired me into the market scene. Over the last two years I have experimented with all kinds of projects including wall blocks and snow globes and now have a full jewelry range. I would never have assumed 2 years back that I’d be doing what I am doing now! It has certainly been a private expansion journey and I’m slowly getting over my embarrassment and underconfidence!

Describe what you create? A lot of what I create now is the Cheek pinchy jewelry range. It is a full range that includes brooches, rings, earrings, necklaces and bands. The photographs all spring from vintage books and have been set onto a beech plywood base. I’ve a choice of jewelry that uses limited numbered reproduction photographs and also some one off items. The latest reproduction range is made of mainly bird, floral and botanical photographs. When I get time I love continuing to create one off cards and wall blocks in a collage style.

What provokes you? I am inspired by the support of my family, the grace of creation and the legacy of my grandmother who always talked about the 1950′s and 60′s as ‘the twilight days ‘. I have a love of all things vintage and a selected obsession with all things related to deer, birds, army and nautical themes! I am also inspired by color combinations and the way that different colours stimulate robust emotional reaction in folk.

What are your favourite materials to use? Why are they your favourite? My favorite material to use is vintage books particularly children’s books. I love opening them up to learn the decayed, earthy smells, the yellowed and stained pages, the front cover inscriptions and ‘extra ‘ illustrations their kid owners have given them over the years.

What would you say is your biggest achievement to date? I believe the last few years have seen my biggest achievements that being tackling the role of parenthood, coming to terms with issues of my own youth and following my passions thru establishing Cheek Pinchy. Apart from all that I was a bit of a whizz at jazzercise in the 80′s. Complete with my hot pink lycra tights, leotard and leg heaters, I was a force to be reckoned with!

Do you have any future plans for your jewellery? I find making future plans for Cheek Pinchy a little frightening as I’m astonished by what’s happened in the last few years already. I definitely have some other product concepts floating around but am going to let things grow organically at this point.

Where are your favorite places on-line? I expert all over the place online principally blog jumping but I mostly check in on the newest secrets on Post Secret and tantalizing finds on Etsy.
What kind of music do you like listening to while you work, if any? I’ve got a terribly eclectic musical taste but my favorite music to work to is super kitsch 80′s pop! Nothing truly gets you going like Spandau ballet, Wham!, Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie, Culture Club, Duran Duran…did I mention Jazzercise earlier.. ?

The Benefits of Costume Jewellery

Costume jewellery is a fantastic, low cost alternative to expensive jewellery pieces. There is an abundance of stylish costume jewellery available in shops and online, and the best thing about it is that it is generally very inexpensive.

Not everyone can afford expensive diamond rings or sapphire necklaces. However, that does not mean you cannot achieve the same look for considerably less. No one will know the difference if you are wearing a cubic zirconia engagement ring instead of real diamonds. You cannot tell the faux pearl necklace you are wearing is not made of cultured pearls.

Even those people who can afford the real thing and have the bank account to spend thousands on diamonds, commonly opt for costume jewellery. Jackie Kennedy was notorious for wearing fashion jewellery. And she was a leading trendsetter! No one could tell what she was wearing was, in fact, costume jewellery.

Another benefit of costume jewellery is because it is so inexpensive, you can really jazz up your jewellery collection and your clothing collection. You could wear a new piece of jewellery every day with a different outfit. Instead of buying new shirts, for example, wear a large chunky statement necklace made of rhinestones or turquoise baubles. Costumer jewellery is so versatile that you can make both your clothing and your jewellery collection go the extra mile and give you that much needed extra bang for your buck.

Another great thing about costume jewellery is that if you lose it or should it break, it is easy and inexpensive to replace. Many people actually put their expensive jewellery in a safe and wear costume jewellery because they are too nervous to wear the real thing.

Costume jewellery can also do wonders for your self-esteem. Wearing jewellery makes one feel chic and in style. It adds that extra touch of glamour. When we know we look good, we feel better.

Feel confident when you wear your costume jewellery. When you are complimented on your fabulous bling, smile and say thank you. No one ever has to know that the jewellery you are wearing is costume.

The Perfect Accessory

there seems to always be worry in the world on what to wear, never a good thing to worry about. It is tough to think about what is right for the night?

Even if you do end up finding a sexy outfit, and your hair doesn’t look like you’ve just escaped a bees nest; there is always the question about what to wear to compliment that outfit or that hairdo, even to compliment your skin tone.

If it is a first date you are going on, you want to draw as much attention to yourself s you can, so big Amber jewellery is a definite must. The amber stone will flatter a range of skin tones, and if you’re wearing a black (which most girls do on a first date) or a gold top it will go with your outfit beautifully making you the star of the evening.

If you tend to get invited to a lot of parties it must get hard trying to find a new ensemble for each one, not to mention very expensive. The costs can come down a lot of you are putting different accessories on each time. Doing this with a gorgeous set ofCeltic jewellery can always achieve a good look. It’s subtle yet sets your sexy jeans or dress off perfectly and will go with formal or casual wear.

How about a wedding? thinking about the accessories for this day is not an easy one at all and you will need help? A beautiful piece of shining, silver neckwear. It’s all you need -from the beginning of the day: when your hair is spectacular, your make up is gorgeous, and your dress is pristine; to the end: when your mascaras running, your hair is a mess, and your dress is needing a serious iron- to make you the belle of the ball.

thinking about the accessories needed no matter the importance of the day is also important.

Caring For / Cleaning Your Diamond Ring

If you’ve recently received a diamond ring – a cherished present marking a special occasion or milestone in your life – chances are you’ll never want to take it off. However, any piece of jewelry, diamond rings included, can ultimately become clouded or damaged if not cared for properly – even in the course of normal, everyday life. Here we will show you how to care for your precious gift so it will forever maintain its shine and luster.

Just as your clothes and skin can become oily, dirty and even caked from the dirt and muck you encounter each day, so too can your diamond ring. In fact, your diamond ring acts as a sort of magnet for oil and dust particles, even if you can’t immediately see the effects. Many women think they can solve this dilemma by simply taking their ring off before engaging in messy activities, but as most experts will attest to, dirt will find its way to the diamond nonetheless. While you can’t avoid the effects of dust and oil altogether, you can set up a regular cleaning schedule.

A proper diamond cleaning routine can either involve taking the ring into a jeweler – a great idea, especially if the service is free – or self-cleaning the ring at home. If you choose the latter, you may be surprised by how easy self-cleaning can be. All you need are a few things to get started: water, liquid soap and a rag or small brush of some kind. Combine the water and the soap and fully dip your cleaning instrument into the sudsy solution. Remove the brush or rag and use it to completely scour both the band and the diamond stone. After the ring is rinsed and dried you will invariably be reintroduced to a sheen you thought you had lost forever.

After you have finished scrubbing your ring with soap and water, dump this solution and refill the container with fresh water only. Put the ring into the fresh water for a short time to fully rinse the soap off. If after completing these steps the ring still looks a little murky, you may want to purchase a jewelry cleaning kit. These kits are usually very inexpensive and contain special chemicals designed to treat even the dirtiest gems. When finished, rub the diamond with a soft, non-abrasive lint-free cloth until dry.

Cleaning your ring is not the only way to keep it looking dazzling for days to come. Avoiding tasks where it may become scratched and storing it in a designated jewelry case can help avoid scratches. Also, avoid using harsh cleaning chemicals which can discolor the diamond, making it appear splotched or faded. Just as with any other prized possession, taking a little time now to make sure your ring is cared for properly can save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars down the road.

Pandora Charms Go Great With The Pandora Bracelets

If you love jewellery, a Pandora Charm bracelet should definitely be on your wrist. Or there should at least be one in your jewellery collection. There are lots of reasons why I say that. Here are a a couple of the best reasons I am in a position to think about for heading out today to get one for yourself:

One or more of the neatest things about a Pandora charm bracelet is the direction the “bracelet” part of it is designed. It has 3 sections, with small ridged or threaded areas dividing the sections. The charms also have threads inside them, so they are often twisted over the threaded sections. The divided sections will keep the charms from sliding around and from all sliding to one side of the bracelet. This system also makes it simple to change the bead charms around on the bracelet.
The numerous various types of charms available for Pandora charm bracelets are one of the better things about them. The charms are all designed for you to express your personality, your likes and perhaps your dislikes, and to mark the milestones in your life. They come in precious metals in addition to glass, crystal, and porcelain/ceramic, and also in every color you can think about. The chances are almost astounding!

These charm bracelets are extremely high quality and will stand upright to normal wear and tear beautifully. The clasps are secure and durable, and the bead charms are all created with high-quality materials, all lead-free. There is little to no chance that you will ever lose your bracelet owing to a clasp failure!

A stunning starter Pandora bracelet in leather or cloth will only run you about forty dollars, so just about everyone can afford to own one of these beauties. The individual charm prices vary widely depending on the material they are made of. The real beauty of it is that you can add charms at your own pace, when can pay for to.

Pandora Bracelets are extremely attractive and make the right piece of jewellery caused by their unique capability to work so well with such a variety of fashion styles. They are stunning little bits of jewellery, needless to say, but having one of these bracelets on your arm will be a very unique and personal way to express yourself. Nobody will have a similar one. Your bracelet will be a fantastic way to have memories and things you love there with you wherever you are. Nobody needs to know the meaning of the charms on your bracelet unless you want them to. It’s yours, and it’s yours alone.
A Pandora charm bracelet should most definitely be on your wrist, and hopefully you now agree. They are not only affordable, unique, and personal, they are just plain gorgeous. Go get started on designing one for yourself today!

Is Your Jewellery Too Formal?

going out for a day out with your partner or family is great but when it comes to putting on those all important accessories you really do not want to try too hard, it will look silly? You think any piece ofjewellery will do but when you think again you have a ‘too formal’ problem.

Amber jewellery orSilver rings can almost always save the day. If you’re married you will almost certainly have a ring on your finger anyway – your first piece of everyday wear. Of course if you are not married what now?

going for a normal kind of ring on each hand is something worth going for because it never looks too much. it really does make you look and feel great, you do not want to make yourself look too sparkly for a simple day out.

if you are looking for something to wear around your neck or on your ears then you need to actually make sure you do not go over the top, doing this would once again make you look a bit silly, you need to put your hair into a bun or something like this to compliment those earrings?

if you think about it, something amber usually works with most colours. do not put big earrings on or something like this, most of the time they look silly and you look like you have tried so hard. amber studs or something like this will actually bring out a glow in your cheeks and make you look the part. a small necklace will bring out colour in the shirt. As well as a small amber ring to go along with your silver one to make you look even prettier. even thinking about putting amber into a bracelet can be great.

of course if you really do not know what to do at all then I would say go for a mix between the silver and amber rings, you really cannot go wrong at all.

Time For That Precious Jewellery

There seem to be more and more people out there wearing pieces of jewellery that are really important to them all of the time and all I can say is that this is a good thing and these are just some of the reasons why.

Shows You Care

If you have been given that piece of silver jewellery by your girlfriend and you are wearing it all of the time then it actually shows the person that has purchased it that you really care about the piece of jewellery. it does not even matter if you like the piece or not, the main this is that you are showing the person you care. This is actually a great way to show someone that you love them.

Respect

you are showing the person a lot of respect by wearing something like, especially if a person has passed away. This doesn’t matter if it is silver rings or something like amber jewellery you are showing people that the person really mattered to you by wearing something like this.

Any Dangers Of Doing This?

the main kind of danger from wearing something all of the time is that it is very likely to get damaged and you do not want this. The best way to stop this kind of thing from happening is not to wear it to work if you are doing something that it could get caught on. another key point to raise is that you should not be wearing something like this in water because it is very likely to get damaged by something like this.

All in all it is up to you if you wear a piece of jewellery all of the time, I think that it is a great idea if you are doing it in the right way!

In the end, what you really do is up to you!
