One of the worst parts of moving is trying to find a new hair salon. You can find a new grocery store, new social group, just about anything, but a hair salon is really tough. If you’ve moved recently, or just need to find a good beauty salon, there are some things you can do that will make your search a little easier.

Finding a hair salon that meets a person’s specific needs has become more difficult in recent years. Most salons now focus on one type of hair or style. They often do not employ the methods that many of us are used to. And many styles are not created to last for the length of time that we want our style to stay in place. It will take some time and effort to find the salon that can meet your needs.

When those of us who are less than young get our hair done we aren’t asking for a lot. Most are on a schedule of shampoo and set once a week, a cut every couple of months, and a permanent once a month. We don’t want a shampoo and blow dry, we want a “style” that’s going to last for a week without major combing, curling, or a lot of other effort. We don’t want to become a model or movie star. We just want our hair to look great and last as we complete our daily tasks.

In an area with a lot of salons, the list can be narrowed by calling salons. When prices don’t include a shampoo and set, but “someone” can do it if they have to, the salon is probably not one to keep on the list. When there is a long period of silence, or muffled discussion after asking about a set, the stylists probably do not do this type of styling on a daily basis.

In most cases, the marvelous hair salon we are looking for will not be where we expect it to be. The stylists who do hair for people who are mature are usually found in an out of the way location. They love doing hair and probably aren’t very good with the new styles and up-dos that are done in many salons. These stylists usually have a brand new blow dryer that they have never used and must replace their curlers regularly.

A person can get very spoiled when they go to the same salon for years. A close friendship develops as a person goes to the same salon and stylist every week. They know what your hair will do and how it will react to a certain cut, color, or permanent. The salon owner will usually know you by name when you come in and have time to chat about what has been happening in the salon since you were last there.

In a new location, you have to start to develop this relationship all over. It can be as difficult to find a new salon and stylist as it is to make new friends. One way to find a great stylist is to ask a person with the style you like where they get their hair done. Asking new friends where they get their hair done will help to narrow the search. It also helps to ask people who have the style that we like where they got their hair done. Most of the time the salon we will be most happy with will not be heavily promoted or advertised and word-of-mouth will be one of the few ways that they will be found.
