When your tights and pantyhose reach the end of their useable life, you don’t have to throw them out but can instead re-use them in a variety of ways. Here are a few thoughts on what you can do with your old tights and pantyhose.

 

· Old (washed) tights have a variety of kitchen uses, most noticeably in the straining arena. You might choose to use them as a strainer for jam making or anywhere else that a strainer is needed, or as a wine filter.

· In a similar vein, you can use them to pour old paint through them to remove lumps and make it useable again.

· Strips of nylon can be a great way to remove nail varnish. The nylon in the tights is excellent as removing nail polish.

· Don’t believe you cannot laddered tights as an item of clothing. You could for instance wear them underneath other clothing to keep you warm in winter.

· If you roll them up or put a sock in old tights they act as a great shoe buffer, and can give an amazing shine!

· You could cut out the feet part and use your old tights to hold things in for storage such as carrier bags.

· They might be a great emergency fan belt, so keep a few pairs in your glove compartment.

· Fill them with sand to make draught excluders.

· Use as cushion filling.

· You can make fragrant sachets out of them by filling them with, scented flowers. These can be great when put in wardrobes or cupboards.

· Higher denier versions or wool blends make great cleaning cloths.

· You might also use your old tights for a varierty of first aid. They can be used as a flexible sling, or tie them around a bandage to give extra pressure to the wound.

· They have a number of uses in the garden. They can be used to tie in tree branches and support young plants – some of the top nurseries use old tights. You could want stretch them out over vegetable patches to protect them from children and animals, and similarly can be pulled up over potted plants. Because they’re porous they’re breathable and will still let water through.

· Tights have a variety of craft uses, especially for children. They can be stretched out over coat hangers to make fairy wings, stuffed with tissue or newspaper to make a cats tail for fancy dress, and you can even make stuffed animals out of them with a bit of imagination.

· Stockings have often been used as a disguise for bank robbers. Tights could give the same effect, if you don’t mind the bunny ears, but bear in mind that robbing banks is illegal, dangerous and certainly not a very good use for your old tights.

 

As you might have guessed right now there are many uses for old tights and pantyhose. Before you throw them out, think about all the things you could be able to do with them!
