Back To The 80s Fashion
The decades of 1970s and ‘80s brought many new fashions and style statements into being. The designs were state-of-the-art and leading edged and struck a chord with millions of people. The fashion industry had a very swift transition during those years. MTV, which appeared on the scene then, revolutionized fashion, music and many other things. People tried to express themselves in many ways. The era saw sudden changes in the styles of men and women.
People used to sport tight clothes on the upper half and loosely fitting fabric on the lower half in the 70s. There were dramatic development in the 80s fashion. This got completely reversed in the decade of 80’s where women used to wear bold dresses having shoulder pads and men wore shirts in full sleeves that were stitched in expensive material along with loose fitting baggy trousers that were slightly tapered at the ankle. Former punks introduced the Romantic Movement with designer clothes. New crazes such as designer jeans and “leather in clothing” were a rage among the public.
Women wore high heeled, pointed shoes in business fraternity. Party shoes such as jelly shoe flanked by their glossy colour were an instant hit.. Jogging pants and tracksuits became popular leisure wear. The music bands of this era also came up with their own style statement of faded jeans that were acid washed and denim jackets and also tattoos & piercings were new highlights of their fashion trend. Men started to wear earrings. Hairstyle included a lot of mousse which resulted in a shiny voluminous look. Crimped hair with contrasting streaks of colour was popular among teenagers. Women appeared in short and men in long hair.
The wealthy and powerful wore jewellery engraved with precious gems and stones. Women wore long outlandish earrings with contrasting pairs. They also didn’t shy away from wearing single earrings. Fine gold and silver chains, punk style, neon colours in jewellery defined trends. Shape of the jewellery changed drastically. The jewel trend also gave boost to decorative Jewelry organizer. Men started to wear digital watches with metal bands but later reverted back to dialed watches. Kids popularized colorful plastic watches. Roman numeral adorned the dials of watches. The status defining design was Movado at that time which featured a sleek watch with a dot at 12. Occasionally people also used to wear more than one watch on one arm. People also wore fine gold bracelets and hoop earrings.
Leather bags that were designer became trend setters. Being compact in size, clutch bags became popular. Briefcases appeared on the scene in this era. Women were accustomed to match their shoe colour with that of their bags. Various kinds and designs of shawls with different colours were available for numerous occasions. Women wore shawls with tank tops during the day which changed into gowns at night. Designer lingerie for women also formed a part of the trend especially the ones with laces and coloured boxer shorts for men. Small eye glasses with metal frames became a rage in these days. However round and small glasses remained popular in the entire 80’s. Fashion had heavy impact on the everyday living of those decades.
